Crete Island

If you enjoy the luxury of luxury resorts with swimming pools and tennis courts in a traditional Greek setting then Crete is the islands for you. For the more adventurous, off-the-beaten path type, this island might not be so much for you. Crete is the biggest island of all the Greek islands with a rich cultural heritage there are enough things to see to occupy a tourists for weeks. When Island hopping Crete is recommended for the two week packages where one has the time to spend 5-6 days exploring the Turkish-Greek divided Crete, with beauty everywhere you go. There are a few musts when you visit Crete, like renting a car and bringing a guide. Crete is highly recommended during the hot summer off season. Crete is a must see but be sure allow several days for exploration. 




Chania Prefecture

This town is considerded to be one of the most beautiful towns in all of Greece. The town is divided into two parts; The New Town and The Old Town. The New Town is where the daily business is conducted, post office, banks offices, etc. The Old Town is built around the Venetian harbor and the architecture paints the image of past foreign domination. It has also been home to many excavation sites, therefore, the town is filled with many artifacts. Be sure to visit the light house and the Firkas Fort, where during the summer months there are many outdoor performances. The Old Town is also the center of night life with Tavernas, bars, and clubs. If you're in search of good quality hand made leather products Skridlof Street is the place to go. There is a local specialty, called the 'Bougatsa', that is only offered Apokoronou Street. It has the texture of a cheese-pie and it is made with a secret local recipe, a 'MUST TRY'. Chania is the setting of an ancient world with modern accommodations, and it offers many little local surprises and specialties around every corner.

Heraklion Prefecture

Heraklion town is the capital of the Heraklion perfecture and of Crete. It is filled with rich historical artifacts from a medley of periods; 1st and 2nd Byzantine, Roman Period, the Archaic traditional Hellenestic period, and the Venetian. There is a whole lot to see in this town so you better grab your comfy shoes and get ready to walk.


Lassithi Prefecture

Agios Nikolaos is different than all other towns in Crete because it manages to successfully blend- art, leisure, relaxing, and partying- into one town. The town rests upon three hills on the northwest side of the Mirabello bay. The most attractive feature is the bottom-less lake, Voulismeni, in the middle of the town. According to legend, this is where Athena used to take her baths. The lake was recently connected to the sea. From the coast line the small island of 'All Saints' can be seen, and ferry rides are available to the island. Throughout the summer the municipality organizes festivals, cultural events, music and dance, outdoor performances, exhibitions, and shows. During Naval week artistic swimming, wind-surfing, and water skiing contests are organized. The town also houses one of the best Archeological Museums in all of Crete. Wide range of accommodations is available in this town ranging from high-end luxury to backpacking lower priced hotels. If you're in Crete, you really can't miss out on Agios Nikolaos.

Rethymnon Prefecture

This town is one of the best preserved towns of the Renaissance period. It is a mixture of the exotic Turkish architecture and the artistic touches of the Venetians. The layout of the town is in direct correlation with the sea, the main street runs parallel to the sea. A quiet walk through the back alleys of Rethymnon will transport you back in time and you'll find yourself lost in a beautiful world that once existed centuries ago. The night life in Rethymnon is well known, filled with taverns with live Cretan music, bars, discos, the options are endless. The nearby beaches are definitely worth the visit, both are located just west of the town.
